I have diabetes. It’s under control, but still present. I’ve lost a lot of teeth as well. I wanted to replace them, but my dentist said I don’t have the bone necessary. He suggested All-on-4 Dental Implants. I’m worried that I’m not a good candidate for that based on what I’ve read. Can a diabetic have that done?

It’s a common concern for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes to contemplate whether dental implants will have a positive or negative impact on their health. While the procedure is not impossible for people with the disease, you must know you are at a higher risk of implant failure. It’s suggested for people with uncontrolled diabetes not to consider the procedure — but if you have controlled diabetes, you can do well.

Knowing you have an increased risk for an unsuccessful outcome doesn’t mean it happens to every single patient. Despite complications that can cause your dental implants to fail, several advancements in techniques and materials confirm not all people with diabetes will experience failure. With controlled Type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you will have a better chance of success.

Benefits to Dental Implants

  • Protects you from Facial Collapse.
  • It’s like having healthy, natural teeth.
  • They stay in place. You’ll never have to worry about them slipping, like dentures.
  • You can eat what you want.
  • You can brush and floss like normal.

Are All-on-4 Dental Implants the Right Choice for You?

The only real reason to do the All-on-4 procedure rather than traditional implants is bone loss. Sometimes, with gum disease and tooth loss, you lose so much jawbone structure you don’t have enough to retain dental implants. All-on-4 is one way to get around that. However, there is a better, more reliable option.

If you don’t have enough bone to support traditional dental implants, I’d consider getting bone grafting done. It will build back up your bone structure. Then you’re free to get whatever procedure you want. I hope this helps you make your decision.

Specialist or General Dentist?

While many dentists say they do dental implants, most of them only actually do the restoration and outsource the surgery. When that happens, there is always a chance of miscommunication which causes the implant to be placed incorrectly.

At Anacapa Dental Art Institute, Oxnard, we do both procedures. You’ll never have to worry about miscommunication that way.
