Dental implants are by far the most effective option to replace a missing tooth. As long as you’re a suitable candidate for the procedure, it’s worth choosing dental implants over alternatives such as dentures or dental bridges. However, it’s important to understand that you’re committing to a very long process that can take as long as 6-8 months to complete.
If you’re considering dental implants, you should understand not only how the procedure will affect you but also have a realistic understanding of recovery process. We are here to help you plan for your recovery and to show you how you can aid the healing process.
Dental Implant Process
Dental implant treatment is carried out in three steps.
The implant made up of medical grade titanium is inserted into the gum to replace the missing tooth root. During the healing process, this implant will fuse with the jaw bone to create a stable post replicating a natural tooth and restoring the original function.
Next, an abutment is attached to the titanium implant. This will connect the underlying implant with the crown or restoration replacing the visible tooth. Abutments are generally also made from titanium but can also be made from porcelain or gold.
The final step is the attachment of the crown or restoration. This replacement will restore the function and appearance of the missing tooth. This is a result of the crowns resemblance to a natural tooth and the strength of the post to produce an authentic restoration. Steps 2 and 3 can often both be performed at the same appointment.

Dental Implants Healing Process
Unfortunately, all three steps cannot be performed in one day. In order to have a lasting solution, it is necessary to allow healing time between steps 1 and 2 to give your body time to adjust to the implant.
Step one requires Dr. Saj Jivraj to surgically insert the post into the jawbone in the space left by the missing tooth. After this surgery, you will be required to wait approximately 3 months for the bone to fuse with the titanium implant. This will ensure the gum has completely healed and the post will be strong enough to support the incoming abutment and crown. The healing process time will be varied from case to case and will depend whether the implant has been placed on the top or bottom jaw. Generally, implants in the lower jaw will require less healing time compared with the upper jaw.
Osseointegration Must Occur Before Placing The Crown
Enough time must pass in order for osseointegration to occur. Osseointegration refers to the process in which the functional and structural connection occurs between bone that is living and the surface of the implant. The bone essentially fuses directly to the implant to prove enough stability to support a tooth. We will then place the dental implant within the bone in order to replace part of the root of the tooth.
Once this occurs, several months must pass for osseointegration to take place. Osseointegration typically takes around four to six months to complete. Once osseointegration occurs, we can attach the dental crown to the tooth, allowing the patient to chew on the implant without any issue.
After this healing time, Dr. Jivraj will assess whether you are ready for the second phase of the treatment, which involves taking an impression of the implant and constructing your prosthesis (either crown, bridge or dentures). A final appointment will then be arranged to have these attached to your implants.

Special Instances of Note
If a patient has a failing tooth that we need to remove, then we will extend the implant process as the bone must heal before we can place the implant to restore the tooth. A bone graft might be necessary within the tooth socket to keep the bone open and allow for an easy placement of an implant at a later point in time.
It is even possible to place an implant the same day as the tooth removal. It is important to note that some patients are not ideal candidates for immediate implants. The best way to determine if dental implants are the ideal treatment is to schedule an appointment with us.
