“When Is It A Good Time To Get Dental Implants?” is the most common question patients ask.
When is it the right time to get dental implants? At Anacapa Dental Art Institute, we get a lot of customers who come in and ask for implants. What we do is we check and assess the condition of the patients to see if it’s the right solution for whatever their teeth problems happen to be. However, we don’t allow boys under 17 years of age and girls under 14 or 15 years of age to have the procedure. An increasing number of people are opting to have long-lasting dental implants and this is certainly something we are likely to recommend here at Anacapa Dental Art Institute, Oxnard, CA.

When Is It A Good Time To Get Dental Implants?

The answer is…

As Soon As Possible

One of the most worrisome issues surrounding missing teeth is bone loss in the jaw. Without a tooth root to stimulate the bone, it will become less dense in the place where the tooth once was. The longer you wait to get your dental implant, the more bone loss you will suffer.

By getting a dental implant, you can actually replace the missing tooth root structure. The bone in your jaw will be stimulated to bond with the titanium implant peg, creating a strong, stable base for your implant and also helping to stop bone loss.

As you can see, in order to maintain healthy bone in your jaw, the best time to get a dental implant is as soon as you possibly can. Unfortunately, not everyone can just walk into the dentist’s office and get a successful implant.

There Are Four Different Times That Might be Suitable for You.

#1 Immediate Dental Implants or Waiting 1 to 2 Months

The first solution is an immediate dental implant placement, or we may suggest waiting for approximately one to 2 months after the tooth is removed. With an immediate placement, we will insert a dental implant at the same time as removing your natural tooth. This may mean using a bone graft as there could be spaces around the dental implant. We tend to only suggest this solution where the bony socket is largely intact. Waiting 1 to 2 months after tooth removal allows initial gum healing, and this is an advantage as inserting a dental implant at this time will ensure it is protected by gum tissue and can provide great aesthetic results.

#2 Early Placement

Early placement refers to the placement of dental implants within a few weeks of having your teeth removed. This timing is common if you have gum disease or other infections that we want to get under control before placing dental implants. If you have an infection, immediate placement may put your implants at risk, so it’s a good idea to wait to get your implants placed. Although your gums will have begun healing, there won’t be much bone healing yet at this point, so the placement of dental implants will still be relatively easy. Another potential benefit: sometimes this short delay can help us manage your gums so we have a more attractive result in the end.

#3 Delayed Placement

Delayed placement is generally our least favorite time for dental implant placement. Placement of implants a few months after extraction of teeth can present many challenges, since the healing of the bones has begun but may be progressing at an uneven rate and may even be in a vulnerable state. But this might be the best timing for your implants if infection is proving difficult to control.

#4 Waiting Longer to Insert Dental Implants

The another option is to wait between two and four months before placing the dental implants to allow some bone healing. Placing a dental implant at this stage helps to aid osseointegration, leading to a stable and strong dental implant that will be fully bonded with your jawbone. The next option is to wait between four and six months before placing a dental implant and this allows complete bone healing and might be particularly useful if the empty socket was affected by disease.

Waiting Longer Is an Option Before Getting Dental Implants

Obviously most people will want to get the dental implants as soon as possible and we completely understand. However our highly experienced periodontists want to ensure that every treatment is a complete success and for this reason we may sometimes suggest waiting longer before carrying out implant surgery. If this is the case, there is no need to worry, as we always provide replacement teeth for use during this time and we will never leave you without a smile or without the ability to eat during treatment.

Finding the Right Implant Dentist

The skill and experience of your implant dentist is a huge factor in the success of your implant procedure. It is very important to find an implant dentist that you feel totally comfortable trusting with your implants. Some key signs of a quality implant dentist include:

  • Specific training in dental implants
  • Large number of happy implant patients
  • Partnership with a quality dental lab for fabrication of implant crowns

Controlling Oral Infections

It is important to be in good oral health prior to your dental implant surgery. This will help reduce the risk of any complications during your recovery. If you have a moderate to severe gum disease infection, your Camarillo Implant Dentist Dr. Saj Jivraj can help you cure the infection before your surgery using treatments such as root scaling & planing and antibacterial mouthwash.

Quitting Smoking

Smoking in general is bad for your oral health. It can be especially dangerous for smokers to undergo oral surgery, as smoking can interfere with healing. It is best to quit smoking well before your surgery—and hopefully never start up again.
